In a New York Times report Sunday, a senior Washington official said that President George W. Bush stands behind Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Israel, and there is "no question" that they [the U.S. administration] understand the "toll that the whole disengagement debate took on Israelis".
Bush said the message New York wants to send to Sharon is one of congratulations, not pressure, during Israel?s time of internal struggle, and as Sharon gears up for the upcoming 2006 elections.
