After the second hearing for the petition by attorney Gilead Corinaldi and two former chief rabbis, the High Court of Justice asked Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to look into the diplomatic possibility of appealing to the Palestinian Authority, United Nations, and the United States, to assure the safety of some 30 synagogues remaining in the evacuated Jewish Gaza communities. Pending his response, the Court has forbidden the army from destroying the synagogues.
The petition stated that the Rabbinical Court had ruled unanimously that it is against Jewish law for Jews to destroy synagogues, and Israel would set a dangerous precedent for the world by blowing up abandoned shuls.
