Late Tuesday, Croatia's Jewish leaders of the small community voted to fire the only rabbi in the country, the other having been killed by Nazis during World War II. Many of the voters agreed that Rabbi Kotel Da-Don had split Jewish believers and had prompted many to avoid synagogue.
Some 40,000 Croatian Jews were killed by Nazis, leaving only 2,500 in the Jewish community. The Jewish leaders have decided to bring in a rabbi from abroad.
