U.S. orders Abbas to gain control over Gaza

After former PA Security Chief Moussa Arafat was gunned down in his house by Palestinian gunmen on Wednesday, and after a mob of Palestinians had a confrontation with IDF soldiers after the former stormed the evacuated Gaza settlement of Neve Dekalim, U.S. State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack reiterated the United States' expectation of the Palestinian Authority -- and of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas -- to gain control over Gaza.

According to a report on Ynet, McCormack said that the persistence of terror and violence is driving a wedge between the Palestinians and is undermining their aspirations for a better life.

McCormack nevertheless praised Abbas' stated commitment to dismantle terrorist infrastructures.

But, the fact that Palestinian officials were in contact with the gunmen/kidnappers of Arafat's eldest son, Manhal, a senior security commander, suggests that a major crackdown on the gunmen is not imminent.

In the meantime, Abbas cancelled a trip to New York to attend the UN General Assembly due to the rise in violence in Gaza.

The AP contributed to this report.
