Israel is calling on Hamas to disarm and halt all attacks before the terrorist group is eligible to run for the Palestinian National Council (PNC).
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom have been putting a lot of effort into encouraging the international community to condemn Hamas? involvement in the Council, for which elections will take place in January 2006.
It is unclear if Israel will interfere in the elections if the terrorist organization ends up running. But until now, Israel has only used diplomatic means to discourage the candidacy.
