Early Monday morning, Maj. Gen. Yisrael Ziv said the army has prepared a new defense system for against Israel proper after the Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip. He explained that soldiers that had served within Gaza would be redeployed to serve on the new Gaza-Israel border to defend southern Israeli towns, and said he is confident that the new system is effective and will be able to deter mortars and rockets fired on Israel by Palestinian terrorists.

The high-ranking officer described the withdrawal as "formal and orderly" despite the immediate reaction of Palestinian mobs, which looted and burned the synagogues left standing in the abandoned Jewish towns of Gaza.
