On Sunday, Israeli troops posted orange signs on 21 Gaza synagogues, declaring them holy, prior to the formal Israeli withdrawal Monday morning. The move came after the Israeli cabinet voted 14-2 against razing the houses of worship, despite prior knowledge that the Palestinians would permit the desecration of the Jewish buildings.

Palestinian Authority minister of security Jibril Rajoub said that the PA would do nothing to preserve the synagogues. In addition, Fatah's Al-Aqsa Brigades and Hamas promised to level the shuls.
