On Monday, Palestinians raided the abandoned Jewish settlements of the Gaza strip in what a Ynet reporter called, "an orgy of looting and vandalism." Synagogues were set ablaze and "celebratory" bullets were shot into the air as Palestinian security forces watched from the sidelines. What the Palestinian Authority had promised would be an orderly and gradual process of taking control of the Gush Katif area, quickly escalated into a situation of total chaos, with armed terrorists as security forces quickly becoming overwhelmed by the force and numbers of the masses.
An officer on the ground in Gaza, Ahmed Hilas, said that control will be regained by the Palestinian Authority in 3-4 days, but the only effort being made to halt desecration of the synagogues is in Kfar Darom, where special masked forces are guarding the synagogue, which has turned for the time being into a base for security forces. Two Palestinians who had attempted to defy police were beaten up.
