The lead candidate for United Germany's new Chancellor, Angela Merkel, told Haaretz, "We [Germans] must take a clear and public stand about maintaining close relations with the Jewish community in Germany and of course, close relations with Israel, especially on the level of personal encounters.?
Merkel, an unmarried, East German protestant running in a Catholic-influenced male-dominated party added that relations with Israel are a "treasure" and that she sees it as, "important to heighten society's awareness of the meaning of anti-Semitism, which means the hatred of mankind."
