In an attempt to thwart future laptop thefts in response to two recent major thefts of IDF laptops, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Dan Halutz announced Tuesday that from now on officers will need to receive a special permit to purchase laptops.

Prior to the incidents, Military Police were responsible for checking army computers, but only when they held top-secret files. Now, in accordance with Halutz's new instructions, the police will be responsible for checking all army computers. IDF officers have frowned upon the new instructions, calling Halutz's new orders, "too harsh?.
