Toward the end of the meeting between US President George W. Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Wednesday at the UN Summit in New York ? in which the two discussed the peace process -- Sharon raised the delicate issue of Jonathan Pollard, asking Bush to release the convicted spy.
"If you want to help me, his release will help me more than anything else," said Sharon about Pollard, who has been in prison for 20 years on charges of releasing top secret information to Israel.
Bush recounted that Sharon has asked him for Pollard's release at every meeting, and that the President's position has not changed.
Esther Pollard, Jonathan's wife, accused Sharon of not being serious about Pollard's release from prison. She claimed that the Prime Minister called Bush ahead of time to participate in a "sharade" for the sake of the Israeli public.
