Rose Sher, a college student at the University of Southern California and a New Orleans native, says she went into shock when she realized that her 89-year-old grandfather, Zeidy, was still in New Orleans when the eye of Hurricane Katrina hit.
Her parents had left the city early to take her sister to college. They had decided not to take her grandfather along for the trip because he had recently suffered several heart attacks. Instead, he remained in his home across from Tulane University when the levee breached and filled New Orleans like a fishbowl.
Zeidy, a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to New Orleans after World War II, was rescued by a neighbor, who swam with him and another neighbor out of their homes, and onto dry land.
