During the chaos on the Egypt-Rafah border following the Israeli withdrawal, Palestinian men took the opportunity to take Egyptian brides for themselves. PA sources say at least one hundred Egyptian women were smuggled in to be brides. Palestinian men were encouraged to take Egyptian brides due to their lower dowries, and Egyptian families were inclined to give their daughters to Palestinians for a better life in Gaza. One bride said she had always dreamed of marrying a Palestinian because, as she put it "they know how to look after their wives and provide for them."
