On Tuesday, Uzi Dayan, former head of the National Security Council, announced in a press conference the need for more evacuations of settlements in Judea and Samaria, and said he was also in favor of setting up an interim settlement with the Palestinians. Dayan, whose strategic views are well respected, said that Arabs who had fled Israel in 1948 during the War for Independence should be given the right to return to former Jewish settlements in the West Bank. He named the thirty-two Jewish settlements. Under Dayan's plan, over 20,000 Jewish Israelis would need to be resettled.
