On Wednesday, the Palestinian Authority outright rejected the Quartet's demand to dismantle armed terrorist factions -- instead, Palestinian leaders called for the World community to stop meddling in their internal affairs. Abbas told reporter, "With regard to the issue of the armed Palestinian groups and our dealings with them, this is an internal affair," and the PA's chief negotiator, Saeb Erkat, said "We were hoping that the Quartet would call on Israel to disarm armed groups that participated in the elections for the Knesset. Why are they asking us to dismantle the armed groups while the settlements are full of armed people?" Furthermore, Hamas released a statement saying, "We see the Quartet demand as an attempt to drive a wedge between the Palestinians," and went on to say the demands should have been made on Israel to withdraw from "all Palestinian territories" and release prisoners.
