Justice Minister Tzipi Livni formally told Prime Minister Ariel Sharon her dissatisfaction with the implementation of the Tal Law, which has resulted in fewer Ultra-Orthodox Israelis being drafted. The Tal Law provides yeshiva students with a special exemption from military service. Livni stated her main concern to be not enough of the yeshiva students choose to join up for a shortened military service or community service after their "year of decision." Under the law, yeshiva students may leave yeshiva for one year, which is their "year of decision" to decide whether to join the IDF like all other graduates in Israel. "Some of the law?s clauses are not being implemented and the number of (yeshiva students) who join the army following the 'year of decision' is lower than expected," said Livni.
