The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture has banned the cutting of palm tree leaves in the Sinai area, causing a serious shortage of palm fronds to create lulavs in Israel prior to the Sukkot holiday. In reponse, MK Shaul Yahalom has written a letter to Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and Agricultural Minister Yisrael Katz asking them to intervene. The shortage of lulavs has raised the importing price from one US dollar last year to USD 4 this year, making a lulav cost 160 NIS on the consumer market in Israel.
