The only survivor of the accident, Yomyuri Shombon, 53, has questioned the Israeli company Zim Asia boat's account of the incident with a Japanese fishing boat. Shombon said that the Israeli ship was able to rescue the other crewmembers, thereby possibly saving others beside himself. The Israeli ambassador to Japan, Jon Yokota, told Ynet, "The question now is, was this really a case of hit-and-run."
