Parliament on Monday confirmed the appointment of Ehud Olmert as finance minister in a compromise vote Monday following an earlier decision to reject a package of Cabinet nominations submitted by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Sharon was forced to drop the nominations of two allies, Ronny Bar-On and Zeev Boim, in order to win Olmert's confirmation. Rebels in the ruling Likud Party are still furious with Sharon over the September withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and said the Bar-On and Boim appointments were political payoff for their support for the pullout.
"Today it has been proven that the Likud is, de facto, two factions" aides to Sharon said after the vote, one faction led by Sharon and the other by the dissidents.
