Israel's army chief told a parliament committee Tuesday that Israel would continue the targeted killings of the Palestinian terrorist group Islamic Jihad because the practice has curbed attacks on Israel, the panel's chairman said.
Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz told the Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee that the targeted killings would be focused on Islamic Jihad, committee chairman Yuval Steinitz said. Islamic Jihad has carried out the most violent attacks against Israel since an informal cease-fire went into effect in February, including four suicide bombings.
The military spokesman's office said it does not comment on comments military officials make behind closed doors.
Israel had suspended the killings in February in connection with the cease-fire, but resumed them several months ago. Most targets have belonged to Islamic Jihad.
