Union leader Amir Peretz won a stunning victory Thursday over elder statesman Shimon Peres in the race to lead Israel's Labor Party, a vote that could bring down Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's shaky coalition and propel the country into early elections.
The labor leader captured over 42 percent of the vote, while Peres took just under 40 percent.
Peres, the current party leader, wants Labor to remain as the junior partner in Sharon's government. Peretz, who wants to steer the party closer to its socialist roots, has said he wants the party to pull out of the coalition and force elections before their scheduled November 2006 date.
Sharon's Likud Party is deeply divided following his withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Without Labor's support, he will struggle to keep his coalition intact until the next election, raising the likelihood of early balloting.
