Labor Party leader Shimon Peres said Thursday that he suspects fraud in the party's primary and called for an internal investigation after preliminary results showed the elder statesman deadlocked in a race he was expected to win.
Peres made his demand at a surprise news conference at 3:15 a.m. (0015), as the party was compiling votes from Wednesday's primary.
With more than three-quarters of the votes counted, challenger Amir Peretz held a narrow lead over Peres, 42.2 percent to 42.1 percent. A third candidate, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, trailed with 17 percent and conceded the race. Opinion polls had forecast a decisive Peres victory.
Peres did not directly accuse Peretz of foul play, but said reports of wrongdoing by his opponent's supporters had to be checked.
