India deports 5 Israeli-Arabs for entering country with incorrect visa

Indian immigration authorities have deported five Israeli-Arabs on a religious mission for trying to enter the country with incorrect visas, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The Asian Age newspaper said the five men, who arrived in the southern port city of Madras on a flight from Sri Lanka on Thursday, possessed tourist visas. Indian laws require foreigners to obtain a special visa if they intend to visit the country for religious purposes.

The five, who voluntarily disclosed to immigration officials at Madras airport that they wanted to deliver religious discourses, were deported Friday, the Age said. None of them was known to be connected to any militant or radical organization, it said.

Immigration authorities were not immediately available because of the weekend to confirm the report.

The five were questioned only because there was an alert at all Indian airports following intelligence reports of a possible terrorist attack, the Age said.
