Israel's foreign minister traveled Tuesday to Tunisia, the first time an Israeli plane carrying an official delegation has flown directly to the North African country.
Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, who was born in Tunisia but left as an infant, is leading Israel's delegation to the U.N.'s World Summit on the Information Society, which starts Wednesday in Tunis. Shalom flew into Djerba, southern Tunisia.
On the agenda were the Middle East peace process, Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and bilateral issues, Regev said.
Shalom was also scheduled to visit the local Jewish community and to accompany his mother on a visit to his birthplace, the port city of Gabes.
