Palestinan teen killed during land dispute with PA police

A Palestinian teen was killed in a gun fight between his clan and Palestinian police during a dispute over former Israeli settlement land, Palestinian officials said Saturday.

In what police described as an illegal land grab, the influential Astal clan had fenced off half an acre in the former Jewish settlement of Neve Dekalim, police said.

When police came to tear down the fence on Friday evening, gunmen fired at them, and a firefight erupted. Seventeen-year-old Naef Astal was killed and five people were wounded, including two policemen.

Later in the evening, dozens of gunmen attacked the police building in the nearby town of Khan Younis and set fire to two police cars, said the governor of the Khan Younis district, Hosni Zourab.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has said the former settlement land would be used for the public good, including housing projects, nature reserves and industry. Before Israel's pullout from Gaza in September, settlers controlled about one-fifth of the crowded coastal strip.
