Germany going ahead with plans to sell Israel submarines

Germany is going ahead with plans to sell Israel two submarines and will pick up part of the cost itself, according to two news reports Saturday.

According to advance copies of reports to be published in this week's Der Spiegel and Focus magazines, the contract for the two "Dolphin-class" diesel submarines will be signed in Israel on Monday.

The magazines, without citing sources, said the deal was worth approximately US$1.2 billion, with the German government picking up one-third, or up to US$388 million.

A German government spokesman refused comment, saying it was policy not to talk about security issues.

In December, the Israeli military publication Bamahane said the two submarines would augment a fleet of three already owned by Israel.

Israel took delivery of the first of three of the submarines in 1999. The Dolphin-class submarine is capable of carrying nuclear-tipped missiles, but there is no evidence that Israel has armed the subs with such weapons.

The weekly said the new subs would have improved technology to allow them to remain submerged longer than earlier models.
