Prime Minister Ariel Sharon formally quit his hardline Likud Party on Monday with a letter to the party chairman, a senior party official said.
Sharon's aides have confirmed he has decided to leave Likud, and was to make a formal announcement in a nationally televised news conference Monday.
"I am resigning from the party and forming a new one," Israel Radio quoted from Sharon's letter. The party's faction chief in parliament, Gideon Saar, confirmed Sharon sent the letter.
Likud legislators met for their weekly meeting in parliament on Monday. The oversized leather chair normally reserved for Sharon at the head of the U-shaped table was moved to the side.
At the same time, Sharon was meeting at the prime minister's office with Likud breakaways.
