Israel has approved the construction of 350 new homes in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) settlement of Maaleh Adumim on Monday, the Housing Ministry said.
The new housing units fall within the already established city limits, said spokeswoman Pnina Ben-Ami, and do not constitute an expansion of the settlement.
Maaleh Adumim, with 30,000 residents, is the largest Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria and is located about eight kilometers (five miles) east of Jerusalem.
Israel earlier published tenders for 315 housing units in Jewish settlements. Last week the anti-settlement watchdog group Peace Now reported Israel had issued additional tenders to build new infrastructure, including roads and electricity stations, in Maaleh Adumim and two other settlements.
Palestinians are concerned that expansion of Maaleh Adumim will encroach on east Jerusalem, which Palestinians hope to establish as the capital of a future state.
