Eleven Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers were injured in gunfights on Wednesday after troops entered the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) town of Jenin in pursuit of suspected terrorists, Palestinian and Israeli officials said.

One of the Palestinians was moderately hurt, and the other 10 were slightly wounded, Palestinian doctors said. The Israeli army said the soldiers were also lightly wounded.

Heavy exchanges of fire were reported in the center of the town, which the army placed under curfew, Palestinian security officials said. About 70 army jeeps and 25 armored personnel carriers entered the town, they said.

Troops entered houses in search of the wanted men, residents said.
The army said it was conducting a routine operation to arrest Palestinians suspected of terrorist activity.

The AP contributed to this report.
