A Palestinian from the West Bank was indicted Sunday on charges he raised about US$10.5 million in Europe for suicide bombers and their families, Israeli police said.
Ahmed Salatna allegedly raised the funds over 16 years for the Hamas terrorist group through four organizations based in seven European countries, and transferred them under the guise of charity for poor families, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
Some of the money was used to help carry out a suicide bombing in August 2001 that killed 15 Israelis, Rosenfeld said.
"We're talking about financially backed terrorist activity and terrorist cells," Rosenfeld said. "After the money was brought in, it was transferred to suicide bombers and their families in order to support them."
Salatna was arrested in September in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) town of Jenin, where his fund-raising operations were based, he said.
The names of the European foundations that raised the money are the British-based Human Appeal International and INTERPAL, France-based CBST, Italy-based ABSPT and the Al Aqsa Foundation, which operated in Austria, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden, Rosenfeld said.
Salatna's arrest was part of a wider investigation into the funding of Palestinian terrorist groups, police officials told Army Radio on Sunday.
