Elder statesman Shimon Peres is expected to leave the Labor Party, his home of six decades, and join forces with another aged but still powerful leader, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, in a dramatic realignment of Israeli politics following the summer pullout from Gaza and part of the West Bank (Judea and Samaria).
Aides and media reports said Peres would make his formal announcement on Wednesday after dropping broad hints during a quick trip to Barcelona, where he accompanied an Israeli-Palestinian soccer team - one of his pet projects.
In an interview with Army Radio on Tuesday, Peres hinted at his intentions. "It's not easy to leave a party, after so many years, including as its leader, a party where I was born from the ideological point of view," he said.
