Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has given troops the go ahead to resume targeted killings of known Palestinian terrorists in response to the latest wave of rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel, his deputy said Monday.
While Israel has always reserved the right to pre-emptively kill terrorists deemed a threat, the frequency of such attacks fell off somewhat after a February cease-fire.
"I think the order given by the defense minister is appropriate and it is really one of the tools which have proved effective in the war against terror," Mofaz' deputy Zeev Boim told Israel Radio. "It is necessary to combine operations, including - but not limited to - targeted killings."
On Nov. 1 Israel killed two top Palestinian fugitives with a missile attack on a car in which they were traveling in a Gaza refugee camp. The following week Israeli army chief Dan Halutz said the policy had proved effective and would continue.
The AP contributed to this report.
