The United States is trying to prevent Israel from selling South Korea four early-warning aircraft in a deal worth US$1.25 billion, the Haaretz newspaper reported Thursday.
In a competing offer, the American firm Boeing has proposed to sell such planes to South Korea for US$1.6 billion, the daily said. The United States has threatened to torpedo any deal, saying Israel would not receive an export permit from the United States for the sale, which is necessary since the aircraft includes American parts, Haaretz said.
The Israeli firms involved, Israel Aircraft Industries and Elta, have informed South Korea that they have applied for the American license, but it could take time. |
