German Vice-Chancellor Franz Muentefering called Sunday for the U.N. and the European Union to address remarks by Iran's president questioning whether the Holocaust happened and saying Israel should be shifted to Europe.
"That is something that we cannot accept," Muentefering said after talks with Jewish community leaders in Berlin. "It makes sense for the international community as a whole to find a way" to make that clear, he said.
He said the issue "must be addressed at EU and U.N. level," but didn't elaborate.
"As Germans, we see ourselves as particularly responsible," Muentefering added.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad drew international condemnation on Thursday when he cast doubt on the truth of the Holocaust and said European countries such as Germany or Austria should give up land for a Jewish state.
Ahmadinejad already sparked outrage in October when he suggested Israel should be "wiped off the map."
Israel and the United States cite Iran's hostility toward Israel as a reason why the Iranian theocracy must be prevented from developing nuclear weapons.
Germany is trying along with France and Britain to negotiate an agreement that guarantees that Iran's disputed nuclear program is not used to produce weapons.
