Israel has arrested a Palestinian terrorist in the Judean and Samarian city of Nablus suspected of being paid up to US$3,000 by Lebanon's Hizbollah terrorist movement to carry out attacks on Israelis, Israeli security officials said Monday.
The terrorist, Majdi Amar, belongs to the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, a Palestinian armed group with links to the ruling Fatah party. While Hizbollah paid Amar to attack Israelis, the Palestinian Authority paid him up to US$700 not to carry out attacks, the Israeli officials said.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Amar was arrested in November, but a gag order prevented the details from being made public at the time.
Hizbollah has previously provided money and arms to Palestinian terrorists. In the past, Palestinians have been arrested for such activities, and also for being trained by Hizbollah.
Since Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000, sporadic fighting has erupted between Hizbollah and Israeli troops based near the Lebanese border.
