The leader of the terrorist group Hamas in the Samarian city of Jenin was killed Wednesday during a shootout with Israeli troops who were trying to arrest him, the group and witnesses said.
Zaid Khalil Moussa, 28, was one of several Hamas terrorists Israel targeted in an arrest operation in the city, group members said on condition of anonymity because they do not discuss such matters with the media.
Palestinian gunmen and Israeli soldiers exchanged intense fire when the troops surrounded buildings where Moussa and other wanted Hamas terrorists were hiding, witnesses said.
An Israeli border policeman suffered light injuries in the shooting. No further casualties were immediately reported.
The army confirmed that it was carrying out an arrest operation in Jenin but did not provide further details.
Israeli troops frequently enter Palestinian communities to arrest terrorists suspected of planning or carrying out attacks.
The AP contributed to this report. |
