Palestinian gunmen take over PA election office

Palestinian gunmen on Tuesday took over a Palestinian election office just outside Jerusalem, officials said.

The gunmen were demanding that the ruling Fatah Party include more representatives of the A-Ram neighborhood in its list for parliamentary elections on Jan. 25, said Amar Dwaik, director of the Palestinian election commission in the area.

Palestinian militants have gained increasing control of the streets in recent months as lawlessness has grown. Palestinian security says it has been greatly weakened by more than five years of fighting with Israel.
