Israeli army drops leaflets warning Gaza residents

Israeli airforce planes dropped leaflets in Gaza warning residents against entering a new no-go zone in northern Gaza starting Wednesday evening, the army said.

Israel decided to enforce the buffer zone in northern Gaza in an attempt to halt terrorist rocket fire on Israel, the army said.

The leaflets, including a map, tell residents to stay out of the area for their own safety.

"Anyone who will not heed to this warning is placing his/her life in immediate danger," the leaflet states. "Know that the terror organizations have turned you into hostages and human shields and are harming your interests."

Palestinian terrorists in Gaza often fire homemade rockets at Israeli towns. The rockets are highly inaccurate, but since Israel's summer withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, more areas of Israel, including the city of Ashkelon and its power plant, have come into rocket range.

Earlier this month, a rocket landed near the power plant and a fuel depot, alarming Israelis.

The AP contributed to this report.
