Israeli intelligence believes that Palestinians have succeeded in smuggling into the Gaza Strip a few anti-aircraft and 305 anti-tank missiles since Israel withdrew from the coastal area, an official said Monday.
The weapons were smuggled into Gaza in the chaotic aftermath of Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in September when the border with Egypt was wide open, Internal Security Gideon Ezra told Israel Radio.
Israel must ensure that Palestinian militants don't transfer the weapons to Judea and Samaria, where they would be closer to Israeli cities, Ezra said.
"We need to better monitor those people (Palestinians) who cross from Gaza to Judea and Samaria, and carry out the searches that are needed there," Ezra said.
Israel's Shin Bet security agency believes that the Palestinians also brought into Gaza thousands of rifles and several tons of explosive material, the radio said.
Palestinian militants frequently fire crude, inaccurate Qassam rockets from Gaza into Israel but they usually do not cause casualties.
The AP contributed to this report. |
