Hebron settlers on Tuesday threw eggs and chemicals at Israeli soldiers after eight settler families were ordered to leave a market area.

The violence broke out when police tried to distribute eviction notices giving two weeks to leave the area. If they refuse to leave, the army will remove them by force, said Lt. Adam Avidan, a spokesman for the army's Civil Administration.

"The order ends any chance of them being able to live there legally," Avidan said. "I don't think they will be able to return there in the future."

The Civil Administration, the branch of the army that deals with civil affairs in Judea and Samaria, granted Modi'in Illit construction permits to build some 1,500 housing units on what Israel considers state lands, Avidan said. However, the regional council went ahead with plans to construct additional homes, he explained.

The Civil Administration said that while the land undoubtedly belonged to Jews, the settlers had entered their houses without permission and were therefore being evicted.
