Israeli soldiers shot and killed an armed Palestinian Wednesday in the village of Tarameh, near Hebron, the army said.
The soldiers arrived in the village to arrest a fugitive, the army said. Troops searched a home in the village but found only a pipe bomb, the army said. Then troops entered an adjacent building, and a Palestinian wearing an armored vest and carrying an assault rifle jumped out from behind a sofa, the army said.
The soldiers ordered him to put down his weapon, but he refused, so they shot and killed him, the army said.
During a search in the building, troops found two handguns, four cartridges, bullets, an ax, knives and other military equipment, the army said. The man killed, identified by Palestinians as Mustafa Mohammed, was the same fugitive the troops were searching for, the army said.
The Israeli army often carries out arrest raids in Judean and Samarian villages, hunting down Palestinian terrorists.
