Three Likud ministers resigned from the Cabinet of Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Thursday, Israeli radio stations reported, in an expected move that did not threaten to alter government affairs ahead of March 28 elections.
A fourth minister, Silvan Shalom, did not immediately resign but was expected to do so at a Cabinet meeting on Sunday.
Olmert is expected to nominate new ministers from his Kadima Party in the coming days. Israeli media has said that elder statesman Shimon Peres will be named foreign minister in the interim period.
Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu had demanded the resignations, saying the party should be in the opposition, but postponed the order after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a massive stroke last week.
Olmert was named acting prime minister after the stroke. Sharon left the Likud in November to form the centrist Kadima Party. |
