Two Israeli army raids in Judean and Samarian towns early Wednesday left two Israeli soldiers and three Palestinians injured, according to the army and Palestinian security officials.

About 20 Israeli jeeps entered the Samarian town of Jenin about 3 a.m. in search of a Palestinian wanted for anti-Israel activity, the army and Palestinian security officials said.

The troops surrounded the suspect's hideout, but he fled and shot toward soldiers, the army said. In the ensuing gunbattle, a soldier and the suspect were moderately injured and evacuated to an Israeli hospital, the army said.

Soldiers in a jeep also ran over a militant from the Islamic Jihad group, apparently accidentally, breaking his arm, Palestinian officials said. The man then fled.

A second Israeli soldier was lightly injured in a separate exchange of fire in the town, the army said.

In the Judean village of Tzurif near Bethlehem, army forces surrounded the house where a suspect from Islamic Jihad was staying, the army said. Troops shot and lightly injured the man when he fled the house, the army said. He was evacuated to an Israeli hospital and will be questioned after he is treated, the army said.

Israeli troops carry out almost nightly raids in Judean and Samarian towns in search of wanted Palestinians.
