The German government is confident Israel will handle the crisis over Iran's nuclear program "very, very responsibly," the foreign ministry said Monday.
Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said Saturday Israel would not accept a nuclear Iran under any circumstances and was preparing for the possible failure of diplomatic efforts, though he stopped short of an outright threat of military action.
Germany is confident Israel has a "very realistic assessment of possible options in dealing with Iran," Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger said. "We do not have the least reason to believe that our Israeli friends will not handle this question very, very responsibly."
Jaeger called Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's trip to Damascus Friday to meet with the leaders of the Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad "not a trust-building step." |
