Israeli Attorney General Meni Mazuz said Sunday that the state must recognize the long-distance wedding of Yitzhak Rabin's assassin Yigal Amir, setting up a confrontation with prison authorities over conjugal visits, according to Israeli media.
Amir, who was jailed after killing the Israeli prime minister on Nov. 4, 1995, and Larissa Trimbobler were married by proxy in September 2004. The Jerusalem Rabbinical Court decided to validate the marriage last year after months of deliberation, but the Interior Ministry declined to recognize it.
Mazuz's office told the High Court of Justice on Sunday that it has ordered the marriage be recognized.
The pair's past petitions to be allowed conjugal visits had been rejected by prison authorities because they were not considered married. |
