Israel has arrested five Palestinians suspected of carrying out deadly attacks for the Islamic Hamas, according to a report Monday on the army Web site.
The Hamas cell killed six Israelis and injured eight in shooting attacks in the southern West Bank last year, the report said. The shootings were carried out during a period when Palestinian militant groups were committed to a cease-fire in fighting that began in 2000.
Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings and other attacks during the fighting, swept last month's Palestinian parliamentary elections and is to form the next government. Israel has vowed to have no contact with such a government.
The report said five Palestinians from the Hebron area, arrested last month, were involved in shooting attacks that killed two Israelis at a West Bank junction near Hebron in June, three at another intersection in October and the sixth on a West Bank road in December. Palestinian security officials confirmed that the five were members of Hamas. |
