Israeli Labor Party chief to meet Palestinian leader

The leader of Israel's Labor Party, Amir Peretz, will meet Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday, a Labor Party spokeswoman said.

Israel's ruling Kadima Party - which has a significant lead in polls for the March 28 elections - has distanced itself from Abbas since the Islamic group Hamas swept Palestinian elections in January. Dovish Labor has been more willing to engage him.

"Peretz started a diplomatic process with meetings in Morocco and Jordan, in an effort to form an axis in order to strengthen Abbas and make things easier for him in light of the victory of Hamas in the elections," Labor spokeswoman Gilli Buium said.

Peretz will meet Abbas on Thursday, Buium said. She did not say where the meeting would take place.

Palestinian officials said the meeting would be in the West Bank town of Jericho.
