Firefighters rescued dozens of people, including a mother and her newborn baby, from a burning apartment building Thursday in the Tel Aviv suburb of Petach Tikva.
The blaze erupted on an upper floor of the eight-story building. As flames and smoke leaped from the structure, police and firefighters used a crane to extract residents from the top floors. Hospitals treated 45 people, including four police officers, most of them smoke inhalation. Two were in serious condition, they said.
The rescue service said a mother and her week-old baby were evacuated, along with a pregnant woman and several elderly residents.
Firefighters got the blaze under control 45 minutes after residents were evacuated. Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire.
