Israeli security forces are to go on high alert from Sunday morning, seeking to prevent Palestinian attacks ahead of Tuesday's general election, the police and army said.
Israel police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said 22,000 uniformed and undercover officers would deploy at city entrances and at shopping malls and other public places deemed possible targets. The alert, similar to that imposed during Israeli religious festivals when crowds also gather, would last until after polling day, he said.
Rosenfeld said Israeli security forces had received numerous warnings over the weekend that Palestinians would try to launch attacks, although no specific targets were identified.
Militants have carried out election-related attacks in the past.
The army said 1,500 extra troops would reinforce the police patrols. An exisiting ban on Palestinians entering Israel is to remain in force for the elections. |
