Israeli Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said in an interview broadcast Sunday he would hold intense negotiations with the United States and the international community before carrying out further unilateral pullouts in Judea and Samaria, expanding on his plans two days ahead of a general election.
Olmert, whose centrist Kadima Party is the front-runner in Tuesday's vote, told Israel Radio he would first give a new Hamas-led Palestinian government time to decide whether it wants to moderate its militant ways. Then, he said, he would hold an internal dialogue to determine what kind of final borders Israelis want. Finally, he said, he would ensure U.S. backing for pullouts from Judea and Samaria.
"I spoke about negotiations with the United States and the international community and I spoke about final borders that the entire international community will support, including the United States of America," Olmert said. "I have a basis to believe that there is great openness in the United States, and in other places, to listen to these arguments and also to seriously discuss them."
